Intrinsically safe FORBS sensors

As of October 2, 2022, the Alioth Group, acting in cooperation with DSI-Sandvik Undergound, introduced in the area of the exploited longwalls of the coal mine of the PGG group, a fiber-optic rock mass stress monitoring system based on the unique FORBS (Fiber Optic Rock Bolts System) sensors developed and patented by the Alioth Group (patent application No. P.442438 utility model application W.131019).

Intrinsically safe FORBS sensors have been installed in the longwall roadway arrow in the area of the exploited hard coal longwall at level 500. A grid of FORBS sensors connected by a fiber-optic cable to an analyzer and data recorder allows continuous monitoring of the behavior of rock masses (24H7) with ongoing visualization of measurement data from each anchor on a computer screen for those responsible for the safe operation of the workings.

Those interested in the continuous measurement of rock masses located directly above the longwall arch casing include the rock bump and casing department, the energomechanical department, the geological department with the mine director at the head.

The fiber-optic measurement system of the behavior of rock masses based on FORBS sensors makes it possible to obtain information on geological phenomena occurring at a distance of up to 2.5m from the anchorage point.

.

This system allows to:

  • measurement and visualization of the forces acting on the existing pavement/chamber casing,
  • measurement up to the anchor load capacity of 250-300[kN] depending on the type of measuring anchor used,
  • indication of the moment of exceeding the elastic limit of the used measuring anchors
  • making a decision on the need to “tighten” the sensitive area,

Thanks to our unique system, mine employees can monitor rock mass movements from the surface level. This results in an unprecedented increase in occupational safety – the mine supervisor can track the behavior of rock masses in the excavation on an ongoing basis, take immediate action related to the withdrawal of workers from areas with exceeded strength parameters of anchor, anchor-arc or arc lining equipped with additional FORBS sensors.

We are pleased that the unrivaled measurement solution we have introduced is likely to contribute to improving the safety of people in sensitive areas of the mine.

Other realizations

We are pleased to announce the launch of our latest innovation – the FOLLMS strain and temperature measurement system – a high-temperature sensor! This state-of-the-art system is based on single-mode (SM) fiber optics and is designed for use in the most demanding environments – in temperature ranges up to 1000°C.

The FOLLMS system enables strain, strain and temperature monitoring from 1 to 1,000 points per meter of fiber. This makes it ideal for a wide range of industries, including power plants, nuclear facilities, oil and gas, aerospace, rail, civil and geotechnical engineering, roads, and advanced vehicles, performance equipment, marine vessels and yachts.

Our customers can expect reliable and accurate measurements even under the most difficult conditions. We are proud to bring this cutting-edge technology to the market and are confident that it will revolutionize the way we monitor and analyze data in high-temperature environments.

At the beginning of 2023, Alioth Engineering signed a contract to modernize more power units at ENEA Wytwarzanie Swierże Górne Power Plant. This time we will take care of the maintenance and repair works of the K2, K7 and K9 units.

Thanks to the work of our engineers, we will prepare the surface for non-destructive testing, restore anti-erosion coatings and take care of the adjustment of boiler suspensions.

From December 19, 2022, Alioth Engineering can boast of the implementation of the PN-EN ISO 3834-2:2021-09 standard and Factory Production Control in accordance with EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011.

By the decision of the auditors from TUV Thuringen Polska, we meet the quality requirements for welding metal materials and welded steel structural elements in the performance class up to EXC 4. We invite you to cooperate.

The work of our specialists does not end at the borders of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship.

In recent months, we have supported the repair of the drums of the cellulose and paper plant in Kwidzyń, and we have also supported our consortium member in NDT works for a significant European producer of papers for the production of corrugated board in Świecie.

Alioth Engineering has completed the modernization of another power unit at the ENEA Wytwarzanie Świerże Górne Power Plant. This time we took care of the maintenance and repair works of the K6 block.

Thanks to the work of our qualified team, we were able to successfully prepare the surface for non-destructive testing, recreate anti-erosion coatings on mill fans and repair the main structural elements of the boiler.

Renovation and modernization works on unit K10 in ENEA Świerże Górne Power Plant have been completed. The first quarter of 2022 was spent in preparation for the next start-up of one of the steam boilers in the power plant.

The surface was prepared for tests, suspension adjustments and repairs of fastenings of the main structural elements.

A consortium of Alioth Engineering and the Polish Academy of Sciences applied for funding for a project called “Innovative method of measuring deformation and the actual stress level of elements working in elevated temperature conditions using point and linear fiber optic sensors” as part of the TANGO V competition.

TANGO is a joint venture of the National Center for Research and Development and the National Science Center, which responds to the need to build a bridge between basic research and industrial research and development works.

The application was submitted in June this year and successfully passed the first stages of the assessment. We need to wait for the final results until February 2022. The maximum amount of funding for the project is PLN 3,000,000.

After a month of intensive work for the combined heat and power plant in Łódź, our company has completed the regeneration of 3rd stage steam superheater coils.

The works consisted of cleaning the surface, applying a metal layer by spray metallization and covering the coating with a sealing paint. All activities were performed with the highest technical and material standards.

In partnership with the Institute of Power Engineering – Research Institute, we have completed works on the modernization of the main elements of the K1 OP-650 boiler in the Power Plant located in Ostrołęka.

The work consisted in preparing the surface for NDT testing, including non-destructive testing in the machine part. In addition, we have adjusted the boiler suspensions and all the main elements of the K-1 OP-650 block.
